From Page To Screen: Adaptations That Have Won Best Picture

In the previous 81 years of the Academy Awards, the Academy has honored a total of 20 adaptations with the distinction of Best Picture. From All The King’s Men in 1949 to Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, the nature of both the literary works and the subsequent films has spanned genres, time periods, and of course, subject matter. With the 82nd Academy Awards upon us, we thought we’d compile our own personal bookshelf, so to speak, of all those adaptations that went home with top honors. Whether you’re a book hound, a film buff, or somewhere in between, save your favorites in Springpad to easily remember them the next time you’re searching for some entertainment. (New to Springpad? The 20 films listed in the graphic below have all won an Oscar for Best Picture.  All the books the films they were based on are also listed. To save the list of books or movies, click on the Spring It! buttons below the image.

Uhm… one appears twice in title but once in content – and the title is misspelled. Can’t take that seriously.

Very nice list. I love classic movies and reading this list brought back good memories.

    Thanks for a good read.

Soo… Schindlers Ark was written by Jules Verne in 1982?? And the Book “The English Patient” was Turned into the movie “The Last Emperor”? Nice idea, but considering this made the front page of Digg it would have been nice to see that it was proof-read.

  6. Matt says:

That’s pretty impressive that Jules Verne could write a book based on events that wouldn’t occur till almost 40 years after his death.

  7. Dertiv says:

Maybe there should have been more adaptation to Dances with Wolves.

  8. Walter says:

If you took a quick glance at the Oscar winners list, you would have thought that only a few movies were made last year.

Is this only a partial list of Best Picture winners based off book adaptations? Otherwise, I can’t fathom why Gone With the Wind isn’t here.

Thanks for pointing out some of the edits we needed to make. The graphic has now been updated – with Gone With The Wind included!
