Since we launched the Date Night Planner springpad last week, we’ve discovered that more than 50% of springpad users are choosing to dine in this Valentine’s Day.
While the Date Night Planner has plenty of options, from restaurant reservations and reviews to seeing a movie, show, concert or finding ideas for other activities, more than half of all dates planned so far are for dining in. People are finding recipes from around the web along with reading advice and sharing recommendations for a romantic night at home. Some of the most popular menus include Italian entrees like Shrimp and Artichoke Pasta from Simply Recipes and of course, chocolate desserts like the Dark Chocolate Fudge Layer Cake of Love from Coconut & Lime – showing that staying in can be just as special as an evening out.
What we’re seeing mirrors other surveys about recession-related consumer spending. A recent National Retail Federation survey of more than 8,000 adults reported that the Valentine’s Day average spend will decrease to $102.50 from last year’s $122.98. And, the US Distilled Spirits Council reported that restaurant and bar liquor consumption for 2008 had decreased by 2.2%, while purchases to take home increased 2.9%.
Another recent study from Whole Foods found that an astonishing 81% of married people would prefer a meal cooked by their spouse to a restaurant meal. While half of the respondents acknowledged the weak economy as part of their preference, 64% also say they also believe a home cooked meal is more intimate or special and 73% believe it’s more personal and thoughtful.
So, if fighting the Valentine’s Day crowd this Saturday night is not on the top of your list – learn more about how the Date Night Planner springpad can help you plan the perfect date night.
Its so true. Just think what a restaurant meal for two with wine will buy in a grocery store and wine shop. A five star meal indeed, made with all the love and care you deserve on a special day. And even better, you get to do it together, which makes it even more fun!
